Leadership Training 2024

Our Leadership Programme gives older teen girls the training, support and opportunities to lead younger girls and take on some responsibility for the smooth running of the wider Journeys Programme.

In May 2024, nine girls (aged 15-16) and  Megan and Kim went on a leadership weekend. We met in Alexandra on a Saturday morning, then drove in a ‘Bike It Now Van’ to Lake Hawea. We got to ‘The Camp’ and decided to go orienteering first. (It was raining now, and the weather was going to deteriorate over the day, with snow in the afternoon.)

So we went orienteering in Albert Town. We split into 2 groups, and went over our map reading skills, took turns leading our group, and did some ‘what if’ scenarios. We also got the bothy bag out when we got really cold, and warmed up in there with a hot drink.

After orienteering, we had lunch and got settled into our cabins.

In the afternoon, we all gathered and talked about leadership strengths, and our own strengths that we could bring to Journeys.

We went over safety, and learnt more connection games, which we will teach our groups, as a kind of ‘ice breaker’ games.

The next day, we each chose another aspect of Journeys to help out with, such as; keeping track of gear, social media, topping up snacks etc.

We drove back to Alexandra, and out to Galloway to do an orienteering event. We did it on our own, which we found quite different to doing with a group. It was lots of fun, and a little challenging.

We finished with lunch at a cafe, wrapping up our leadership weekend, everyone feeling more ready to be a Journeys leader!

Bike Packing - Moke Lake to Sefferstown Hut

Our first ever bike packing adventure

In February 2023, seven Year 10 girls and two instructors went on an overnight bike packing trip from Moke Lake to Sefferstown Hut, on Ben Lomond Station. The girls met on Saturday morning in Alexandra with the first task to plan then shop for our weekend’s food at New World, before we headed over to Moke Lake, just out of Queenstown. The team worked together to fit the bike racks and all overnight gear and food onto their bikes, then we headed north on the farm road to Sefferstown Hut. After an explore up ‘McConnochies Creek’ and a swim in Moke Creek, we reached the hut, set up tents and enjoyed dinner together. A walk after dinner had us reach a high point just as the sun set, with spectacular views to the mountains to the north and Ben Lomond to the south. Day two had pack down, ride out to Moke and a swim in the Lake to finish off.

Strategic Planning

With support from Otago Community Trust

We were extremely grateful to receive funding from the Otago Community Trust capability fund so we could do a quality job on our strategic planning process in early 2023. We brought in Jan Hudson, an external facilitator, to take us through a comprehensive process. This included reaching out across New Zealand to a range of young women, and those who work with young women, to consider what are the key issues facing our young women today and into the future. We brought our most experienced young leader, Sofia Druce into the process and she participated in our facilitated sessions with us, as well as Heather Breen from Uruuruwhenua to help us with a broad cultural perspective and incorporation of matauranga Maori. Our final document can be found on our goverance page.
